SE: Mystery hunter claims killer wolf is dead

A wolf in southern Sweden that slaughtered dozens of sheep this summer has been “shot and buried” according to an anonymous note sent to the county administrative board, urging authorities to call off the hunt.

“You can stop playing around looking for the wolf. Imagine what it’s costing the taxpayers. It would be wise to call it off,” the note read.

“He’s already been shot. He is buried a metre under the ground. With best wishes, one who attended the funeral.”

The wolf is believed to have been behind a series of slaughters of local sheep throughout the summer. In June a farmer reported that 20 of his flock in Hestra, southern Sweden, had been massacred describing the scene as a “nightmare”.

However, the wolf has not attacked in several weeks and was last seen on August 16th. Authorities have said the note may be a diversion tactic and are not taking it seriously.

“We don’t know the purpose of this letter, if it is because they shot the wolf or is a way to divert the hunt for the wolf,” predator officer Bertil Nilsson told the Expressen newspaper.

“We can’t take it seriously as we don’t know if it’s true or not.”

The letter has since been passed onto the police.
