The genetically important Finnish-Russian female wolf that the EPA had to move three times to avoid problems for reindeer is back in the reindeer herding areas.
“We have been using DNA samples found that wolf female is in an area used for winter grazing of two sami villages,” says predator coordinator Gunnar Ledström of the provincial government in Västernorrland.
In the latest move in the spring the wolf was in the county. She withdrew northwards and is now north of Junsele near the border with Västerbotten. There are signs that another wolf is in the area.
“We still do not know if it’s a couple,” says Ledström.
Villages who move their reindeer from the mountains into the area shortly want the wolves removed before then.
“We are in dialogue with the Sami villages and discussions with the Environmental Protection Agency to try to find a solution to the problem,” says Ledström.
