SE: Russian wolf pups considered for Nordic Ark

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

Four cubs from a Russian zoo have arrived in Sweden. They will be included in zoo breeding programs and some of the pups may end up at Nordic Ark.

It is hoped that the offspring can help to reduce inbreeding in wolf population.

“It may be necessary to come here but no decision is taken,” says Claes Andrén at Nordic Ark to P4 West.

The cubs, two males and two females, at first are isolated in Skåne Zoo and will then be deployed to form pairs with other zoo wolves.

The pups can form new wolf pairs then can be deployed in different parts of Sweden to introduce new important genes in the Swedish wolf population.

“We now have an opportunity to bring in Russian wolves. By keeping a group of Russian wolves and then exploit their pups for the release, we can fulfill the government’s desire for a greater genetic variability of the Swedish wolf population,” says Andrén to P4 West.

(M) wants to ease predator pressure

Conservatives want to increase the local population’s influence on predator management. (M) announced on Tuesday a report on wildlife. One message was that it does not take sufficient account of local people the opportunity to spend time in nature and the right to protect their domestic animals.
