SE: Saturday’s first wolf killed

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

KARLSTAD / ÖREBRO / TT

When the wolf hunt entered its second day the first wolf was shot shortly after 11 o’clock in Värmland, according to local media. The animal became the ninth after Friday’s eight kills.

Yesterday five wolves were shot in Värmland and three in Örebro. One of the wolves in Örebro was wounded but had not yet at noon today not been found through tracking.

The issue of the hunt is in dispute. In addition to the Swedish organizations that are against the hunt, the European Commission questioned the Swedish position to allow licensed hunting, with the aim of limiting the number of pack territories. According to the SNCC the wolf population is affected by inbreeding, making wolves more vulnerable to diseases.

Those who are for the hunt believe that the wolf is a major concern, especially in rural areas.

This year the planned hunt was stopped in Värmland and Örebro for formal legal reasons relating to the right to appeal. The Admininstrative Appeals Court in Gothenburg overruled the Administrative Court’s decision and thus it became a free for hunters to begin the hunt for a total of 36 animals.

After the Administrative Court’s decision the provincial government in Dalarna also took a new decision on the license hunting wolves to be launched on 24 January. The decision concerns two territories and seven wolves.

The process is still continuing. During the hunt’s short time appeals to the Supreme Administrative Court have flowed in in an attempt to stop it.
