SE: The wolf is benefiting many species

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

STOCKHOLM / TT

The wolf’s comeback in the Swedish forests since the 1980s has benefited a large number of other species, according to a new study by researchers at Grimsö Research in Bergslagen.

In particular, the scavengers who have taken advantage of the new situation. Red fox, raven, jay, pine marten, goshawk, golden eagles and even wolverines feed on the moose remains that wolves leave behind.

The researchers, whose findings are published in the journal Public Library of Science, are careful to point out that there has been no increase in the amount of moose in the forests. However, wolves, unlike human hunters, feed consistently evenly over the year. This is of great importance during the late winter, when many of the scavengers are short of food.
