SE: The wolf population should be halved

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

Sweden has a new predator policy. A while ago the parliament voted in the Government’s proposals that were up for debate last week. The decision requires half the current population sufficient for favorable conservation status.

According to the parliamentary decision there should be 170-270 individual wolves sufficient for favorable conservation status. It’s only half of the current population estimated at about 400 animals.

The wolves will be fewer where the wolf population is densest. And the wolf’s presence in the county, including pasture land shall be limited to the areas where it does the least damage.

The level for the bears is set to between 1,100 and 1,400 animals, it’s only about a third of current population.

The Swedish Carnivore Association came up with a critical press release just minutes after the decision where it is written that the bill lacks a scientific basis, it is not keeping EU law and lacks overall support among conservation organizations.
