SE: Wolf hunt rejected on appeal

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

STOCKHOLM / TT

It was a mistake of the Environmental Protection Agency to decide to license hunting of 16 wolves last winter. The Appeals court in Stockholm made this decision Friday.

The EPA’s justification, that the hunt could lead to a reduced level of inbreeding in the Scandinavian wolf population, the court considers it lacks sufficient support.

Recently opened parliament and government offered measures for a new, comprehensive licensed hunting this winter. But the Wildlife Protection Organization believes that the judgment should mean an end to this.

“If it’s illegal to be licensed hunting of 16 wolves so it’s completely illogical that the government should be opened up to shoot 100 wolves. Now I hope the government comes to its senses and takes a time-out for the wolf hunt,” says Johanna Sandahl, chairman of Wildlife Protection Organization.
