Third Bear Hound Killed By Wolves In July

Dog was training on Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

Ashland Current

For the third time since July 23 a bear hound has been killed by wolves in Ashland and Bayfield counties.

The most recent incident involved a bluetick hunting dog that was training on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest on July 29.

“While the exact pack responsible is not totally clear, the depredation was likely due to the Black Lake Pack. This pack currently has pups and are using rendezvous sites,” information from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reads.

The DNR says wolves are highly defensive of both pups and rendezvous sites and both hunters and dog trainers should be aware of the potential conflict between wolves and their dogs in a caution area set up in the region of the July 29 incident.

The caution area follows County Highway GG to the east, FR 172 south, FR 174 and FR 164 on the west, and FR 173 and FR 176 to the north.

On July 23, the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Wildlife Services confirmed that wolves from the Delta Pack in Bayfield County depredated a bear training hound on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in the Town of Delta.

July 25, USDA-Wildlife Services confirmed that wolves killed a bear training hound in the Town of Port Wing.
