Two more endangered wolves found dead

(Silver City-AP) — Two more endangered Mexican gray wolves have been
found dead in the last two weeks.

That’s according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-the agency
running the wolf introduction program in southwestern New Mexico and
southeastern Arizona.

These bring the total deaths since March 2003 to 13.

An alpha female from the Bonito Creek Pack was found dead January 16th
on the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Arizona. A female from the
Francisco Pack was found dead Thursday west of Beaverhead in the Gila
National Forest.

Program field coordinator John Oakleaf says he’s concerned about the
deaths, but the news is not all bad. He says 20 pups have been born in
the last year.

Tests have revealed that some of the wolves have died from gunshot
wounds, others were struck by automobiles, and the causes of some of the
other deaths are unknown.
