Two red wolves headed to Bulls Island

Two red wolves headed to Bulls Island

(Charleston-AP) Oct. 24, 2002 – Two red wolves from Missouri are heading to
Bulls Island northeast of Charleston in hopes of meeting mates and raising two
litters of the endangered species.

A 16-month-old female, named Echo, will be paired with the male that lives on
the island and has had a mate that is now 12 years old. She is unlikely to bear
more pups and will be retired to a spacious wooded enclosure. An eight-year-old
female will be introduced to a single male on the island. The pair will share a
large enclosure on the island in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

The wolves are coming from the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center in
Eureka, Missouri. Sue Lindsey with the Missouri center says the wolves are
raised for wild futures. She says wolves in captivity have longer, easier
lives, but wolves in the wild have richer lives.
