Wis. DNR to ask board for OK to draw up wolf rules

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State wildlife officials plan to ask the Natural Resources Board this week for permission to draw up emergency regulations on the use of dogs for hunting wolves.

The request comes after a group of humane societies sued the Department of Natural of Resources last month alleging the agency’s rules enacting this winter’s wolf hunt don’t include any restrictions on dogs. The group contends the lack of restrictions will lead to deadly dog-wolf fights. A Madison judge has temporarily banned hunters from using dogs to go after wolves while he weighs the case.

DNR officials plan to ask the board at a meeting Wednesday in Eau Claire for permission to write new emergency rules on training dogs on wolves. They also plan to request permission to draft permanent rules for dogs.
