Wisconsin DNR crafts new reporting methods for wolf hunters

Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants to ask wolf hunters and trappers to help the agency gather more information about wounds the animals have suffered.

According to DNR documents, the agency wants to ask hunters and trappers to register their kills before skinning them. A federal wildlife specialist would observe the skinning and collect data about trauma the animal has suffered.

Animal rights advocates have complained loudly about hunters using dogs to chase down wolves, saying the practice leads to bloody dog-on-wolf fights in the woods.

The agency examined 27 wolves killed by hunters using dogs this past season but the evaluation was inconclusive; the carcasses had already been skinned when the agency examined them.

DNR officials plan to present the initiative to their board Wednesday.
