Wisconsin DNR looking for volunteers to track carnivores

Article by: Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin wildlife officials are looking for volunteers to locate wolves and other carnivores this winter.

The Department of Natural Resources started a program in 1995 to monitor the state’s wolves as well as look for signs of other medium-to-large carnivores. Last year 150 volunteers conducted nearly 8,000 miles of snow track surveys.

Volunteers perform the surveys by looking for tracks as they slowly drive snowy back roads. They also can use snowshoes, cross-country skis or snowmobiles.

This year’s volunteers will have to attend tracking and wolf ecology classes over the next three months. A schedule is available on the DNR’s website.
