Wolf control plan set for review

Wolf control plan set for review

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The latest version of Wyoming’s wolf management plan
is adequate to ensure a viable wolf population in Wyoming, a state
wildlife official said Tuesday.

The final draft would maintain a minimum of 15 wolf packs in the state,
including at least seven packs outside Yellowstone and Grand Teton
national parks, the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway and the
National Elk Refuge.

The plan will be considered by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission
next week.

Initially wolves would be listed as trophy game animals in the national
parks, parkway and contiguous national forest wilderness areas.

Outside the parks and wilderness areas, the animals would be classified
as predatory with few limits on hunting.

John Emmerich, assistant division chief of the Game and Fish
Department’s Wildlife Division, said lawmakers could fine-tune the law
next winter if needed.
