MADISON, Wisconsin (WKOW) – Wolf hunting was a topic of debate at the Department of Natural Resources’ annual spring meeting Monday (04/08).
Wisconsin’s first wolf hunting season is over. But now the DNR is asking people whether they want to loosen the rules. On Monday (04/08) more than 500 people lined up to vote on whether hunters should be allowed to use training dogs to track and hunt wolves. Right now, training dogs are not allowed. But some hunters say the wolves are the real problem.
Bob Morschauser, a hunter, says, “They’re taking a lot of wildlife. They’re taking a lot of farm animals, people’s animals. It’s just their prerogative. Do what you want. Don’t like it? Oh well, live with it.”
Ellen Tsaloff, says, “I work in animal rescue. I feel strongly that this is a barbaric practice. It’s dangerous to the animals used; not to mention, extremely cruel to the wolves.”
Wildlife officials removed wolves from the endangered species list in 2012 and estimate as many as 850 are in Wisconsin. The DNR expects to report the public’s votes today (04/09).
