Wolf found shot near South Dakota-North Dakota border

Wolf found shot near South Dakota-North Dakota border

WATERTOWN, S.D. – Federal agents are probing the death of a gray wolf that
they believe died of a gunshot wound.

The wolf, a young male, was found by a hunter north of Veblen. The U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service was notified last week.

Since the animal was found so close to the North Dakota and South Dakota
border, officials think it could have been shot in either state.

The gray wolf is protected as endangered species in both North Dakota and
South Dakota.

Officials don’t think there are any resident wolves in the Dakotas, but
the Fish and Wildlife Service occasionally gets reports of the animals
wandering in from Minnesota, Montana or Manitoba.

The killing of an animal protected under the Endangered Species Act is
punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and one year in jail.

A reward is being offered for information leading to a conviction.
