Wolf hunting zone closing after one week

The DNR is closing one wolf hunting zone, after hunters hit the harvest cap a week into the season.

DNR wildlife ecology chief Bill Vander Zouwen says hunters in Zone 2, which covers parts of northeast Wisconsin, killed 26 wolves. The cap is 28, so the agency is closing that section at 3 p.m. today. He says it took about a month for the first zone to close last year.

The season opened last Tuesday, and so far hunters have taken just under 100 wolves.

Vander Zouen says the DNR will reevaluate the hunt next year.

The quota for this year’s wolf hunt is 251.
