Wolf suspected in dog killing

KIMBALL, Wis. — A Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist is
investigating a weekend complaint that a Kimball resident’s dog was killed
by a wolf.

John Fesnick, of N. Defer Road, said Saturday his Samoyed had been missing
since Friday. When he went to look for the dog, Fesnick found it dead in
the woods, according to the Iron County Sheriff’s Department complaint.
The dog was “pretty much chewed up,” the complaint said.

After sheriff’s department dispatchers attempted to contact area
conservation wardens without success, they called Iron-Ashland Counties
DNR warden supervisor Mike Vogelsang. He said Adrian Wydeven, a DNR wolf
specialist, will investigate the complaint. Wydeven tracks wolves out of
Park Falls.

There have been at least three recent complaints from the same area in
Kimball of chickens being killed by some type of wild animal.

Last weekend, a Michigan DNR wildlife biologist confirmed a wolf killed
and ate a Matchwood family’s dog and a calf.

Douglas Wagner confirmed the findings to John Smith, of Matchwood, owner
of the family pet, Chewy.

The wolf killed the dog under the porch at the Smith residence.

The calf was owned by a neighbor who had wolf problems in the past.

The WDNR confirmed last year a wolf attacked and seriously injured a
Hurley man’s dog near the Gile Flowage.
