A bear hound was killed by wolves Thursday while training in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Wildlife Services has confirmed that wolves from the Flag River pack killed the dog, a 4-year old female Plott hound, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Six to seven wolves were detected in this pack last winter, and pups were probably produced this spring.
A caution area has been set up in Bayfield County bordered by Highway 13 to the north, Highway A to the west, Fairview Road, McLean Road and Fire Road 248 to the south and fire roads 236, 258, Campbell Road and Lenawee Road to the east. Hunters and dog trainers should be aware of the potential conflict and should exercise caution when in the area, according to information posted on the Wisconsin DNR website.
