WY: G&F: Wolf monitoring to begin near Dubois in Moccasin Basin-Fish Creek area

by County 10 News Desk

Public Reminded to Heed Warning Signs

(Dubois, Wyo.) – As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the population of gray wolves in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD) is beginning scientific trapping operations in the Moccasin Basin-Fish Creek area north of Dubois. Operations will begin on September 16, 2012, and continue through September 25, 2012.

When wolf trapping activities are being conducted for research purposes, the area around the site will be posted with bright warning signs to inform the public of these activities.  The signs will be posted along the major access points to the trapping site.  It is important that the public heed these signs and not venture into posted areas.

Monitoring wolves is vital for estimating wolf population size and distribution in the Yellowstone Ecosystem.   Trapped animals are immobilized, processed, collared, released on site, and monitored in accordance with strict protocols developed jointly by the WGFD and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

For more information regarding gray wolf trapping efforts, call the WGFD Cody Regional Office at 307-527-7125 or your local WGFD biologist or game warden.
