Wyoming Senate pulls money from wolf bill

Casper Star-Tribune

CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Senate on Wednesday moved forward a proposed compromise agreement to remove wolves in the state from the endangered-species list, but only after removing an appropriation for wolf control activities.

The bill, Senate File 41, was approved on first reading by a voice vote, but only after senators removed $200,000 tagged for wolf control activities by the animal damage management board.

Under the proposed agreement, announced last summer by Gov. Matt Mead and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, unhindered killing of wolves would be allowed in all but the northwest part of the state, where they could only be hunted with a license.

The plan also establishes a flex zone covering northern Sublette and Lincoln counties, as well as southern Teton County, in which wolves would be protected during the winter.
