FI: Wolves could be stopped with chili powder

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

TT

This year alone, over 30 dogs have been injured by wolves in Finland’s eastern border area with Russia. Now living in the town of Nurmes there is a test of new invention to protect their pets, a safety vest with chili powder cartridges, reports YLE.

If a wolf attacks a dog and bites into the vest, it will have a cloud of chili powder in the face and mouth – which is considered to be enough to deter the animal from continuing the attack.

There have been prototypes since 2014, but now the completed safety vests are being tested in Nurmes this spring. There are many wolf sightings around the city. Police suspect that someone killed a wolf illegally there in November.
